  • Why Roof and Wall Coatings Are a Good Choice for Your Scotland Home This Winter

The winter is now well and truly here. The nights are getting longer, the days shorter and, of course, it’s getting much colder and wetter. With that in mind, it’s about that time of year for us all to make some home improvements to protect against the elements. Particularly in Scotland where, as we all know, the weather can be particularly unkind!

Heavy rainfall can cause some significant damage to the roof of your home. In the winter, it’s likely that the battery of rain and snow will be pretty consistent and this consistency over an extended period of time will begin to wear down the shingles and tiles on your roof. If this results in gaps in the roof through lost or broken tiles, then moisture can work its way through the roof and into the underlay.

When this happens, it can damage the structural integrity of the entire home through rot or mould which can put you, your family and your possessions in harm’s way. If you’ve got a sloping roof, then water can collect in the areas where the parts of the roof connect and overlap and this can also cause significant problems.

This is all also true when it comes to walls. When extensive moisture is present on either the roof or the walls then it can spell trouble. Mould can be hazardous to your health and can lead to an allergic reaction, rashes, asthma attacks and sneezing. If you have a young child or live with an elderly member of the family then it’s particularly important to ensure that this doesn’t happen as these members of the family might feel the effects more.

With all of this in mind, before the weather gets too bad, it’s well worth considering protecting your roof and walls from potential damage. By using a water-repellent coating, like RENOTEC, on your roof you can make the tiles resistant to moss, improve thermal resistance and reduce the effects of frost damage.

Similarly with walls, by introducing a protective coating you can help mitigate the damaging impact of rain, wind, smog, mildew and prevent the growth of moss spores.
